Fears in a Hat
Perform a “Fears in a Hat” exercise (citation) about group work. Record the fears and your discussion and solutions to each fear.

  1. Not holding others accountable. - letting people slide
    1. Having clear team goals
    2. Set  the stage for performance and expectations
  2. Unequal distribution of workload. - each person taking their fair share
    1. Clear goals and job distribution  
    2. Hold other accountable.
  3. Procrastination of the group and so missing parts or not doing as well.  - waiting till  2 days before and then it’s not your best work and not having the time to proofread.
    1. Overcome by: Set clear goals and timelines.
    2. Set realistic deadlines for all group members and hold each other accountable
  4. Being a good contributor. Being actively engaged
    1. Respect for each other when people speak
    2. Provide an open group environment to encourage active participation
  5. Free riders. - people who are just going to coast and ride on the tails of everyone doing the work
    1. Expect that everyone participate equally
    2. Clearly identify goals of project and each person’s roles/jobs


Commonalities: Common theme amongst all fears is accountability for work and holding others accountable.
Solution: To set clear expectations and goals. Being able to hold each other accountable will lead to a proactive and successful group. It will also lead to an open and respectful environment for each member to actively participate. All of our fears as a group equates to accountability and because of that, we believe that we will be able to hold each other accountable and have a successful group.
